Overview
Smart Nursery is a mobile app developed to give parents a smarter and more flexible way to monitor and care for their baby.
The system combines hardware and software to provide real-time video monitoring, sleep tracking, and remote soothing — all controlled directly from the parent’s phone.
Results
Increase in user satisfaction scores, measured through surveys and feedback tools.
Drop in customer support queries, indicating clearer, more intuitive design and better user understanding.
How I worked on this project
My Role
As the sole designer on the team, I led the entire product design process — from early market research and user interviews, through ideation, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, to building a scalable design system and contributing to product strategy.
I worked closely with R&D to align on technical feasibility and ensure smooth implementation, and with marketing to support product positioning and go-to-market efforts. The product went through multiple iterations based on real user feedback, allowing us to continuously refine the experience and better meet parents’ needs.
Today, the app serves thousands of active users who rely on it daily to monitor and care for their newborns.
The Problem
Traditional baby monitors come with several limitations:
They rely on short-range connectivity
Require parents to carry and charge a dedicated device
Cannot be improved or updated after purchase
This creates a rigid and inconvenient experience for modern parents who expect flexibility, remote access, and ongoing value from the products they use — especially when it comes to their child’s safety and wellbeing.
The Challenge
Designing for new parents meant creating an experience that worked for people who are often tired, stressed, and short on time. The interface had to be instantly clear, easy to use, and require minimal effort.
On top of that, the design needed to work seamlessly with the hardware’s technical limitations including connectivity, sensor behavior, and device states, without compromising the user experience.
The Goal
We aimed to create a connected nursery experience that not only addressed the limitations of traditional baby monitors, but also introduced new value through software.
The app was designed to:

Research
Research was an essential part of the design process from the start. Since we were designing for parents in high-stress, time-sensitive situations, every decision had to be grounded in real user needs and behaviors. Our goal was to understand the market, existing solutions, and the everyday challenges parents face when monitoring their baby.
Key insights
Instant Reassurance
Parents wanted instant reassurance that their baby was safe and moving as soon as they opened the app.
Responding in the Moment
Parents often needed to respond quickly — whether it was capturing a special moment, talking to their baby, or soothing them.
Never Taking Eyes Off the Baby
Parents didn’t want to lose sight of their baby, even while browsing other apps on their phone for work or messaging.
Reassuring Notifications
Parents wanted reassurance that their baby was okay, even when they weren’t actively monitoring.
Seeing the Full Picture
Parents wanted more than live monitoring. They wanted to look back and understand how their baby had been.
Supporting Sleep, Not Just Monitoring
Parents wanted more than passive monitoring. They were looking for ways to be involved in improving their baby’s sleep.
The Design
The Home Screen
The Home screen is designed to deliver instant reassurance. From the moment the app opens, parents are greeted with a live video feed and real-time movement status, providing immediate confirmation that their baby is safe.
To address the need for responding in the moment, whether capturing a special memory or soothing the baby, essential controls are placed within easy reach.
Quick Access to Essential Functions
Easy access to functions like capturing photos, recording videos, talking to the baby, and adjusting settings enables parents to respond in the moment whenever needed.
Video History
The Video History feature organizes recordings into daily segments, making it easy for parents to revisit and save important moments.
Breathing Motion & Sleep Monitoring
The monitor tracks the baby’s breathing motion and sleep, giving parents peace of mind and helping them make informed decisions to improve their baby’s rest.
Soothing Sound and light machine
This dedicated soothing device uses customizable sound and light combinations to help babies fall asleep, wake up gently, and enjoy music during playtime. It addresses parents’ desire for more than passive monitoring by giving them an active way to create a calming, sleep-friendly environment for their baby.
Routines
By scheduling sound and light combinations, parents can create consistent cues that help their baby wind down at night and wake up gently in the morning. This structured approach makes bedtime more predictable and reinforces positive sleep patterns over time.
Quick & simple sharing
With a simple QR code or invite link, parents can give their spouse, babysitter, or other loved ones secure access to the Smart Nursery. This makes it easy for trusted caregivers to monitor and support the baby.
