Overview
Flowstate is a productivity app that helps users not only plan their day, but actually follow through.
It combines planning, focused execution, self-reflection, and habit tracking to support long-term growth and clarity.
The Problem
Most productivity apps are built to help users plan—but not to follow through.
In reality, many users struggle with staying focused due to constant digital distractions, especially from their phones.
Around 20–25% of people identify as chronic procrastinators, and many are unaware of the behavioral patterns driving their procrastination. This lack of self-awareness keeps them stuck in a recurring loop of planning without doing.
As a result, users not only fail to meet their goals—but also experience frustration, lowered self-esteem, and a growing sense of dissatisfaction with their daily lives.
The Goal
Help users overcome procrastination, follow through on their plans, and build consistency through focus, self-reflection, and visible progress.
The aim was to support not just productivity—but also personal growth, emotional clarity, and long-term motivation.
How I worked on this project
The Research Process
To understand the root causes of procrastination and why users struggle to follow through on their plans, I conducted both quantitative and qualitative research.
The goal was to uncover users’ behavioral patterns, emotional blockers, and what might help them stay focused, committed, and consistent in execution.
What I did
Reviewed studies, surveys, and articles related to focus, procrastination, motivation, and habit formation to ground the problem in behavioral science.
Conducted user interviews with 8 participants (ages 20–32) to empathize with the target audience and better understand their challenges, frustrations, and current coping strategies.
Analyzed leading productivity apps, and identified what existing tools do well—and where they fall short, particularly in supporting execution and follow-through.
Gathered user feedback through usability testing sessions and iterated on the design to improve usability, clarity, and emotional engagement.

Information Architecture
The Design
Onboarding
Introduction of the product’s value, learning about user goals, and getting them started right away.
Create Task
Many users struggle to follow through because their tasks are vague or lack structure. Therefore, the interface allows for quick input, but also supports deeper customization when needed.
Create Habit
The flow starts with habit suggestions to shorten setup time and inspire users with ideas for habits they may want to develop.
Users can then define a habit goal by setting either a duration or a quantity, which helps increase commitment and makes the habit feel more concrete.
After creating the habit, they’re prompted to set a streak goal, reinforced by a motivational insight.
This gentle nudge encourages users to commit, increasing the chances of staying consistent and following through over time.
Focus Session
Users start by selecting a task and setting the session duration.
To minimize interruptions, they can activate a Distraction Guard that blocks access to distracting apps.
Once the session begins, they can tune in to music from their favorite genre—helping them get into flow and stay focused.
Mood Reflection
Users can check in with their current mood at any time by selecting how they feel and adding optional notes to describe what’s influencing their emotional state.
This feature is designed to help users become more aware of their emotions, recognize patterns over time, and better understand how their mood impacts focus and productivity.
Journaling
Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth.
By putting thoughts into words, users can process their experiences, clarify their emotions, and better understand themselves.
Over time, this practice supports increased self-awareness—leading to more intentional actions and meaningful personal change.
Profile
The profile tab serves as a personal dashboard where users can track their overall progress.
It brings together key insights from Habit Stats, Mood Reflection, and Journaling Notes—all in one place.
Progress tracking plays a crucial role in overcoming procrastination, building habits, and staying motivated.
By visualizing their journey, users are more likely to stay consistent and committed over time.
